How Do I Change Medigap Companies?

Writer: teribaschteribasch

I have had several people ask recently "How can they change to a different Medigap Company?" Here is some general information about making a change in Medicare Supplement Plans or Medicare Supplement Companies.

In most cases, if you are already in a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap), you will need to go through Underwriting and answer health questions. Your Initial Enrollment Period was the only time you did not have to answer health questions and were guaranteed acceptance. The company you are seeking to change to may also call you to get additional information or request to contact your doctors. The Insurance company can accept or deny you coverage depending on how that Underwriting process goes.

If you are interested in looking into other Medigap Company Plans and Rates I am happy to help. There is no deadline or timeframe to change Medigap to Medigap plans - that can be done anytime. Contact me to receive Medigap Review information for your zip code.

Switching Medigap Policies

The Medigap insurance company may be able to make you wait up to 6 months for coverage of pre-existing conditions. The number of months you've had your current Medigap policy must be subtracted from the time you must wait before your new Medigap policy covers your pre-existing condition.

If you have had your Medigap for 6 mos or more

The new insurance company can't exclude your pre-existing condition.

If you've had your Medigap policy less than 6 months:

The number of months you've had your current Medigap policy must be subtracted from the time you must wait before your new Medigap policy covers your pre-existing condition.

If the insurance company agrees to issue the new policy, they can't write pre-existing conditions, waiting periods, elimination periods, or probationary periods into the replacement policy. The new insurance company can't exclude your pre-existing condition.
